Two short cookbook reviews – Clean and Lean by James Duigan & Gwyneth Paltrow’s Notes from My Kitchen Table

One thing I really love is our local library, East Renfrewshire. My husband and I both love reading, and I have a habit of adding books to my Amazon wishlist, then transferring them into library reservations. I particularly love doing this for cookbooks as it is such a good way to preview it before committing to buy. We already have so many cookbooks that I really try to stop from buying them on impulse (there isn’t room in the cupboard for any more either!).

Recently I borrowed two books: Clean & Lean by James Duigan (after seeing it in Waitrose) and Gwyneth’s Notes from My Kitchen Table.

So, what is Clean & Lean? I have omitted the reference in the title to it being a “diet” as I think that is an awful and negative word – I instead think of it as a way of eating. Not dissimilar to previous posts we’ve done (see October Unprocessed and New ways of eating in 2012), it is basically cutting out C.R.A.P. (caffine, refined sugar, alcohol, processed foods). It’s really easy to learn the “rules” or guidelines and pretty easy to work out what you should and shouldn’t eat. If you can avoid the supermarket aisles when you do your shopping and just stick to fresh meat, seafood, vegetables and fruit, that’s pretty much eat.  My biggest problem is breakfast – and this book has introduced my to my saviour, Clean & Lean Oat Pancakes.

Clean and Lean Oat Pancakes with berries

Clean & Lean Oat Pancakes

Serves 2-4

Ingredients:

100g rolled oats
200g fat-free cottage cheese
4 eggs
1 tsp cinnamon

Simply put all the above in a blender, whizz, then cook as you would normal pancakes.

Now I have read a lot about fat-free, low fat food over the last few months so I happily substitute full fat cottage cheese in the recipe. They are so easy to make and I have never had a failure either. I have them with berries (I buy a large bag of frozen mixed berries and simply microwave a large handful for 1 minute while I’m cooking). This to me is the perfect breakfast as it’s filling, easy and super tasty. I sometimes squeeze over some honey – maybe less than a tsp though.

Now, onto Gwyneth. I was so surprised by her book – it is actually really brilliant! Because of her well-publicised dietary habits, I expected it to be a bit odd and left-field. Instead it is filled with delicious recipes and ideas. She doesn’t eat red meat so that isn’t catered for, but there are really good breakfast and dinner ideas. I would never have purchased this book but for the fact I borrowed it on a whim, so thanks to my local library for having such an amazing supply of books!

Revisiting the Farmers’ Market at The Avenue, Newton Mearns

The Avenue’s Farmers’ Market was on again this morning so we trecked down for a visit to see what was on offer today. Sadly there was no fruit and vegetable stand, but we took some great pictures and got some interesting food:

Farmers’ Market, the Avenue, Newton Mearns

This morning we visited the new farmers’ market at the Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns. Our local markets (Clarkston and Silverburn) can be quite variable in terms of variety and supply so we were keen to check this one out.

It was held in the Marks & Spencer carpark, but on the sidewalk so as to make good use of the empty space without taking up precious carparking spaces. We arrived around 12.30, the market had been going since 11 but there was still a great supply of meats, fish and vegetables available.

We found there was a really great supply of stalls – including beers from Houston Brewing Company, cheeses, breads, a few fish stalls and 3-4 meat stalls.

We picked up some meatballs from Edenmill Farm (sadly they didn’t have any chickens – by far the best chicken I have ever eaten was from this stall at the Silverburn Farmers’ Market), 4 smoked sea bass fillets from Tarelgin Farm Foods & Smokehouse in Ayr (as well as a smoked garlic bulb!) and some fresh vegetables. A big thank you to the stall person at Edenmill Farm for giving us really helpful guidance for our dinner party too – it is that kind of service that makes you really appreciate the added value you get at a farmers’ market.

I was really impressed with the variety on offer and am really looking forward to the next farmers’ market at the Avenue. The farmers’ market will run from 11am-4pm on the fourth Sunday of every month – I will take the camera along next time!

Latte-Tude, Newton Mearns

Excusing the cringeworthy name, we were very excited about the recent opening of Latte-Tude as I am a big fan of eating out at breakfast/brunch (ok, well I enjoy eating out for all meals). Newton Mearns, apart from at the Avenue, is seriously lacking cafés.


We saved our first trip to Latte-Tude for my birthday as we both had the day off, and thought a Tuesday afternoon would be a good time to try it out without a weekend rush. It has a lovely downstairs seating area, with a not-so-attractive view over the carpark. Nonetheless, the environment is relaxed and casual with comfy couches if you are so inclined. 


We ate: 

 Baked potato with cheese, cress & pickle – £5.60

Coronation chicken panini – around £5.00

We also had a piece of cake which sadly I don’t have a picture of, but which was pretty good. 

I really couldn’t fault the food or service as both were excellent. What was disappointing was getting the bill and realising we’d spent nearly £20.00 on a very casual lunch. We had two drinks each (cans of coke are priced around £1.50 each), and the aforementioned cake, but I still rank that as quite an expensive lunch for what we ate.  As a comparison, for the same amount you could have a 2 course lunch with a glass of wine at the nearby Clark & Sons, a couple of pizzas at Il Pavone Sud (albeit without drinks), and its prices aren’t significantly different from the Country Club up the road.  While we might stop off at Latte-tude for a quick coffee and a cake, I think we might go for the better value for money options in the area.

Richard’s, Newton Mearns

We ate at Richard’s on Ayr Road in Newton Mearns on Monday 22 February 2010.

They have a set menu of two courses for £14.95 which seemed like great value. We diverted from this however (it was a special occasion) and went for the specials which had price supplements. I can’t resist a prawn!

I ate: goats cheese salad with walnuts and iceberg lettuce, tiger prawns provencal with rice (£8 supplement) and strawberry & raspberry pavlova.

My boyfriend ate: bruchetta with goats cheese, duck breast with pepper sauce (£5 supplement) and strawberries and chocolate & ginger cheesecake.

It was a lovely, small restaurant with just one waiter and a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. We really enjoyed ourselves and had a beautiful meal, however I think the menu was a bit dated and aimed at the older generation.
