Hopefully you remember my adventures with going sugar free that I posted about earlier this year. I’ve definitely fallen off the bandwagon since (into a vat of sugar) although each time I’ve found my way easily back to a pretty much sugar free way of living. I only have sugar when I’m eating out, and only when really necessary – in the house it’s really easy to avoid sugary treats.
As I mentioned in that post, I have Crohn’s Disease which is my number 1 heath concern and over the years, I’ve moved to lactose-free milk (cheese doesn’t upset me in the same way), I don’t eat ice cream (sob) and generally tried to eat as much fresh, unprocessed food as possible.
In the past few months I’d been noticing I’d been feeling unwell more and more often, and I was encouraged by Z from BAMF Athletics and Steph from Stupid Easy Paleo to give gluten/wheat free a go, and see how I felt. Sarah from Glasgow Mummy was going to give the paleo diet a go, and even though I wasn’t committing to paleo eating, I was definitely moving in that direction, so we became each others cheerleaders. While I’m namedropping all over the place, a final shoutout to Jen from Pie in Soup who’s also gone paleo and had helpful tips & support.
Anyway, so how did it go? It was hard at first as I tend to be an unconscious eater or wholly motivated by what I feel like, rather than what I should have. I made myself stop and think before every meal/snack and aimed to go for the option without bread wherever possible. After just a few days I noticed that if I did have gluten, I would know it straight away from the pain in my stomach. This really helped me stay on track as I knew it just wasn’t worth it.
I went away for a long weekend with the girls from Glasgow Roller Derby and I expected this to be really hard, but again, it was about thinking before I ate. For example, one night we had fajitas so I just had the protein (chicken), vegetables and sauces without wrapping it up. When we had pancakes and bacon for breakfast, I made sure I ate scrambled eggs beforehand and focused on the bacon more than the pancake.
I’m not saying I’ve gone 100% gluten free, as with sugar, I find that is just too hard with the amount of eating out I do. I had dinner at Burger Meats Bun on Thursday as well as lunch on Friday, both times eating a brioche bun and actually I felt fine after having it. They are looking at adding a gluten free bun option too (woohoo!).
Now I just need to focus on upping the amount of vegetables I’m eating. I have been unorganised eating at home, and often don’t have time to cook a meal for lunch so I just end up eating boiled eggs or something. Starting on Sunday, I’m going to start doing proper meal preparation for the week ahead so I can make life a little easier.
